Committees & Working Groups of Interest for Education Publishers

Join the committee here (option for members only, if you'd like to join BISG please go here ).

BISG's Content Structure Committee develops best practices for representing book content, whether destined for print or digital output and delivery.

The committee takes a practical and useful approach to providing short, easily digestible pieces of information (whether web posts, brief white papers, etc.) that address specific content structuring needs and related issues. A particular effort is made to involve or collaborate with other organizations working on related guidelines, such as EDItEUR, IDPF, and NISO. One of the top priorities for the committee is to support and promote the adoption of EPUB 3.

Content Structure Committee Chair
Bill Kasdorf, Apex Content Solutions

In addition to other ongoing work, the Committee published and maintains the Best Practices for Product Metadata: Guide for North American Data Senders and Receivers through regular updates. The most recent version of the document is available for download here.

Through its Rights Committee, BISG develops, maintains and advocates industry-wide best practices designed to support the standardized electronic transmission of a defined set of rights information between trading partners, now and in the future.

Following a brief hiatus in 2013 and early 2014, BISG organized a Rights Summit in June 2014 to reassess BISG's role in mitigating issues in the discovery, management, and licensing of rights in the book industry through the work of the Rights Committee. The outcome of the Summit is summarized in this white paper. Slides from the Summit are freely available here.

The Committee was reconstituted in December 2014, and is currently focused on research to determine the value of and specific needs for a set of standards or best practices for improved rights management, discovery, communications and transactions.

Resources BISG from BISG for Education Publishers: (x )

The EPUB 3 Support Grid was designed to be a handy reference to what enhancements and features of EPUB 3 render correctly on the most commonly used devices, apps, and reading systems. The Grid represents results of reading system tests conducted by industry experts representing leading publishers, service providers, and technology vendors through the auspices of BISG's Content Structure Committee.

Through a partnership between BISg, the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), and the DAISY Consortium, the EPUBTest.org website was created as the new home of both the EPUB 3 Support Grid and the EPUB Testsuite, a set of EPUB 3.0 files designed to enable anyone to systematically test an e-book reading system's support of various EPUB 3.0 features. These files were used to generate the results in the new BISG EPUB 3 Support Grid.

Go to the website here or here to find out more details about the history of the creation of the EPUB 3 Support Grid.

The BISG Educational Taxonomy is a controlled list of key terms used to describe a publication's intended learning outcomes, regardless of alignment with any formal education standards, such as the Common Core.

To find the complete list, please go here.

This resource provides recommendations for describing a publication's learning goals and objectives in metadata, including how to use the new BISG Educational Taxonomy; how to cite alignment with educational standards such as Common Core State Standards (CCSS); and how to use reading levels to enhance discovery of educational content by educators, librarians, parents, and others looking for resources to achieve a specific educational goal. To download the resource, go here .

To help address some of the challenges facing digital content creators, BISG, through its Content Structure Committee's Fixed Layout for E-Books Working Group, has created a Field Guide to Fixed Layouts for E-Books. Download the guide here .

The use of custom fonts in digital books has begun to show promise, but as this guide explains, ensuring your custom fonts will display correctly on the myriad of devices and reading systems available to consumers takes thought and careful planning. BISG's Content Structure Committee created the Field Guide to Fonts for E-Books to help designers make the bets choices when selecting and styling type for digital publications.

Revised and updated Version 4.0 published August 2014. [New edition to be released August 2016!] Formerly known as the Roadmap of Identifiers. the guide now includes both an online diagram mapping the various identifiers as they are used throughout the publishing industry supply chain, and a free downloadable Explanation of Identifiers .

Published by the International ISBN Agency. Valid from January 2007 onward. Go to the ISBN Users' Manual here .

Developed as an educational tool portraying the relationships between key organizations important to the book industry, the Roadmap of Organizational Relationships provides a graphic presentation of the various organizations as they service. In an effort to upgrade and improve the Roadmap of Organizational Relationships, critique is encouraged. Please send all comments to info@bisg.org.

Success in the book publishing continues to rely extensively on the consistent preparation and use of product metadata. As digital products continue to grow and evolve, this is true now more than ever. Download the Development, Use, and Modification of Book Product Metadata here .

An important piece of companion research alongside BISG's Student Attitudes Toward Content in Higher Education report, this survey of higher-ed faculty members -- now in its fourth year -- sheds meaningful light on the changing role of the traditional print textbook as the foundational tool for instruction.

The findings provide actionable responses to the following questions from faculty currently teaching at for-profit, two- and four-year colleges:

  • What are the top criteria used when selecting material for your courses?
  • How has your reliance on a core print textbook changed over the past few years?
  • Do you believe that publishers are providing adequate information about format and price options for students during the content selection process?
  • Do you use publisher-provided online resources for this course? Why or why not?
  • And many more.
Getting Started with EDUPUB (also known as EPub for Education)

This essential guide covers:

  • What is EDUPUB: an introduction to EDUPUB for beginners
  • Overview of the EDUPUB EPUB 3 Profile spec
  • Outline of who EDUPUB is intended for
  • Paths to implementation for publishers
  • EDUPUB's importance to the educational publishing ecosystem
  • Resources for learning more

BISG intends to update theGetting Started With EDUPUB guide frequently, as updates to EDUPUB and changes to industry practice occur. We welcome industry participation. If you know of recent developments, or have suggestions for other topics to cover within the document, please let us know.
